THE
POWER OF VISION!
"I
believe that this nation should commit
itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of
landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth."
John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961
|
|
REMEMBER?
It
was almost forty-six years ago when President John F. Kennedy painted
this bold vision for space before a joint session of Congress?
Some derided the dream as lunacy. Others viewed
it as just another calculated move between the United States and the
Soviet Union.
Despite the skeptics and naysayers, Kennedy's
vision guided NASA's human space flight program, and his dream became
a reality eight years later on July 20, 1969,
when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong took the first step onto the
moon.
SO
WHAT DOES VISION HAVE TO DO WITH
ORGANIZATIONS?
You've
probably noticed that the future is not what it used to be. The country
is going through a rough patch, and times are tough in these first years
of the 21st Century.
As
terrorism, war and economic uncertainty overshadow our day-to-day lives,
it's hard to "see" how things can get better.
The
fact is, things will only get better when leaders light a fire under
an authentic, inspiring, compelling vision of the future that makes
people want to fight to get there.
THE PROBLEM
Albert
Einstein put his finger on the vision problem when he said, "Perfection
of means and confusion of ends seem to characterize our age.
In a
sense, organizations got really good at writing vision statements, and
did poorly in living them. Just
imagine how people feel when layoffs are rampant and the company credo
says, "Our people are our most important asset."
When
people are going out the door at the same time they learn about the
CEO's multimillion dollar bonuses and perks, or their "Golden Parachutes,"
skepticism runs rampant.
TODAY'S VISION IS NOT THE SAME OLD "VISION
THING"
Yesterday,
some did the "vision thing" because it was the stylish thing
to do.
Everybody was doing it. It became politically correct, and organizations
went to great expense to put their "credos" down on paper,
or engrave them on a plaque prominently displayed in conference rooms,
public areas, and the entrance lobby to impress customers and visiting
VIPs.
Today's
vision is about meaning; about a new way of seeing the world; is about
making a difference.
WHAT IS A VISION?
Vision
is not seeing things as they are, but as they
will be.
Your
vision is more than just words - it embodies a vivid picture and the
deepest expression of your collective potential.
MARTIN
LUTHER KING - It must be clear and understandable. When
it comes to clarity of vision, one has only to recall the Reverend Martin
Luther King saying, "I have a dream
"
In one inspired moment King allowed us to literally look through
his inspired eyes at a place we had only imagined.
LEE IACCOCA
- Another visionary, Lee Iaccoca, led the recovery of the Chrysler Corporation
in the 80s. It's a classic case of a group of employees trusting the
vision of their leader.
Iaccoca's
commercial "If you can find
a better-built car, buy it" sent two powerful
messages.
-
First,
he was saying to the world, "We
are going to be the best at building quality cars."
-
Second,
he was saying to Chrysler employees, "I
trust that you will achieve this vision."
The emphasis
at Chrysler to "make it happen" is one of the best turnaround
stories in corporate history and it all started with a vision people
could identify with and believe in.
